Grades 7-8
Fine Arts:
Art – basic drawing, painting, and design techniques using pencil, ink, pastel, and charcoal; Meet the Masters art curriculum (lab fee).
Advanced Art – intermediate-advanced techniques for drawing, painting, pottery and designing; Meet the Masters art curriculum (lab fee).
Show Choir – try outs for this semester long course of singing and choreography [by instructor from Dance Street West]; performances; sponsor Junior High Talent Night; counts for 2 units of PE (costume fee).
Band – practices once a week plus a private lesson; most instruments provided; beginners-advanced (students purchase their own “uniform”).
Puppeteering – hand puppet skills, expression and creativity with puppets; performance.
Improvisaton – improve exercises, skit creation, development of acting abilities and characterization; performance.
Literature – silent and oral reading along with discussions focusing on literary terminology (possible purchase of paperback books).
Writers’ Workshop – characteristics and techniques of writing domains; collaborative writing assignment and enactment (e.g. newscast presentation, including headline news, weather, sports, and special interest reports, editorials, and advertisements (commercials).
Play Production – semester class devoted to script memorization, characterization and stage techniques; try outs for parts; several after school rehearsals; performance; (production fee).
Crafts – macramé; rug latch hook; counted cross stitch (lab fee).
Languages:
Spanish I – introduction to simple grammatical Spanish.
Spanish II – more in-depth study to prepare students for high school Spanish.
Sign Language – third most used language in the nation now accepted for foreign language credit in high schools and colleges.
Computer:
Desktop Publishing – create and design newspapers, flyers, greeting cards, etc.
Multi-Media – integrate text, graphics, audio and video into a presentation technique.
CAD and Graphic Design – elements of computer aided design or drafting and graphics design to create a “Dream House”; incorporate drawing into reports, multimedia presentations and other publications.
0Internet & Web Page Design – access Internet information and create web pages; proper use, browsing, etiquette and advanced search methods; familiarization of HTML, graphic conversion, basic page design and animated Gifs.
Digital Photography – use of scanners, digital cameras and video; use of Avid Camera, Movieworks, and Adobe Photoshop (materials needed: disposable camera, film processing, and other computer related items).
PHYSICAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Students must take 2 PE units per year to meet requirement for state of California. 1 quarter = 1 unit. Sports team members, cheerleaders, and Show Choir members receive PE unit credit (fee for required PE uniform).
Boys’ PE – tailored to meet needs of growing young men.
Girls’ PE – tailored to meet needs of growing young women.
Enrichment:
Student Services – by permission only, assistants for teachers (Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 6th, Junior High and the offices).
Study Hall/Helps – homework time, book report selection, homework planner, and possible extra help for students.
Study Skills – using homework planner, note taking, studying for tests, skills for taking tests, ways to improve reading.
Geography 1 – study Asia, Australia, North and Central America, Arctic regions; five themes of geography: location, place, interaction, movement and regions plus geographic land forms.
Geography 2 – Europe, Africa, South America plus map reading, time zones and climate; interactive computer software “International Inspirer” for a world geography scavenger hunt.
Advanced English Prep – preparation for advanced placement high school English classes; test prep strategies, analogies, parts of speech, vocabulary, reading comprehension and essay writing.
Speech – voice projection, word enunciation, preparation of clear messages; analysis of famous speeches; class presentation.
Real Issues – today’s teenage issues and use of God’s Work for decisions regarding moral dilemmas.
Boys’ Life Skills – surviving in the day-to-day world; money management and dating issues with Christian emphasis, “basic” auto mechanics.
Leadership – strengthen leadership and life skills as a Christian leader.
Math Help – additional help in mathematics geared to individual students’ needs.
Current Events – study current events and importance; apply truth of Bible to situation.
Girls’ Life Skills – career and goal orientation, etiquette, hygiene, social skills, check book balancing, cooking, dealing with positive challenges and choices with Christian emphasis.
Truthful Talk Back – effective response to newspaper and/or magazine articles by writing letter to editor that conveys scripture-based, truth-based opinion.
