"Sportsmanship before Winning"

I play to win.  I believe every time we take the court we need to play to the best of our ability. It's okay if there are other teams that are better than we are, as long as we prepare and play to the top of our game.  I agree with the Olympic motto: Faster, Higher, Farther. However, it doesn't mean faster, higher, and farther than your opponent, but faster, higher, and farther than you yourself have ever gone before. Every time we take the court we need to be playing at a higher level than the last time.
I believe every player who has come out to practice dressed and ready to learn, deserves to play in each game. Not every player serves, but every player plays.  Every player needs to have a clear focus of their role on the team and an understanding of their ability to be an asset both on and off the court. It should never be about one player, but what we as a team can accomplish together.

It is important for girls to learn what it means to be on a competitive team, learn to be responsible and understand the concept that hard work pays off. Therefore, I emphasize the importance of team work and I will give the girls equal playing time for the first two of "best out of 5 games" VB game. Another important concept that I want to reinforce is that every girl on the team has a role to play. If that includes sitting on the bench cheering or being the captain we will all work hard. I am committed to do my best in leading the girls and I expect them to give me their best in return.

As the coach, it is my duty to guide, teach, and assist these students to play their best as a team. I will primarily focus on playing hard, playing smart, and being a team member. We will play hard and play to succeed, and because of that, playing time may not be equal or consistent. Because of the emphasis on team work, it is essential for the student to be at every possible practice. Should a student miss or be late a practice with or without an excuse, it may effect their playing time. This shouldn't be viewed as a punishment, but as a result of a missed opportunity to understand changes or specifics that were introduced or reviewed during practice. Additionally, the starting line-up is never set in stone, but always up to the players who are playing the hardest and smartest team ball. I believe that winning will be a by-product and a standard of how well we are achieving our goals as a team. So while winning is important, and we will make every effort to do so, the focus is on whether or not we are playing hard, smart, and fundamental team ball.

My expectations for my team are very simple: to work hard and have fun. My job as a coach on the JV level is to help them to develop their skills as a basketball player in order to prepare them for the next level.  Things that may affect your son’s playing time include how hard he works in practice, skill level, being late or missing practice, how well he is doing in school, and also what his attitude is like outside of school. Your son is a representative of this team which means they should not be getting into trouble or doing things to give the team a bad name.  This also means that the starting line up is susceptible to change based on these determinations. My goal is that every kid will get to practice and develop his skills, but it is not guaranteed that, during the game, your son will play. This is determined by the game situation (score) and again, this is determined by your son’s commitment to the set expectations and skill level.  One more thing I would like to address is something in regards to the organization of the team. There are three groups of people involved in a youth sports team: players, coaches, and parents. Players play, coaches coach, and parents parent. The way in which most teams are successful is when everyone fulfills their role on the team.
